After months of staying indoors, the first thing we needed post the initial COVID lockdown was to travel again, even if just for a short break. Hyderabad became our destination of choice, offering a blend of history, relaxation, and city life.
1. Day 1: A Royal Welcome at Taj Falaknuma
For the first two days, we stayed at Taj Falaknuma, where we managed to get an all-inclusive deal due to the pandemic. Located on a small hilltop in the old city, the palace welcomed us with a horse-drawn carriage ride to the reception area, though we chose to experience it later in the evening due to the afternoon heat. After a delicious lunch at the restaurant, we took some rest before exploring the hotel and joining the guided heritage tour. The hotel’s panoramic views of Hyderabad made us feel like royalty, a sentiment heightened by the mesmerizing Sufi singing session at dusk. The storytelling about the Nizam’s legendary diamond paperweight was captivating. Dinner at the restaurant was equally magical, with twinkling city lights below making it seem like we were floating among the stars.

2. Day 2: Exploring Hyderabad’s Heritage

Our morning began with an early breakfast before heading to Salar Jung Museum and Chowmahalla Palace. The museum housed stunning artifacts, particularly the ivory chessboard and an intricately designed chair and table. Unfortunately, we missed the famous musical clock chiming by just a minute! The Chowmahalla Palace, with its grand architecture, was another highlight. The vintage car collection thrilled our child, but the experience also brought a sense of the irony of immense wealth and its eventual decline. By noon, the heat became tiring, so we returned to the hotel for lunch and a short rest. Since the pool was closed due to COVID restrictions, the hotel arranged a painting activity for our child. In the evening, we enjoyed another round of Sufi music, followed by dinner. The Taj team’s exceptional hospitality shone through when the manager invited us to a private Sufi performance at the balcony, something we had admired the previous night. It was an unforgettable experience.
3. Day 3: Wrapping Up with Shopping & Boating
After checking out of Taj Falaknuma, we moved to Taj Deccan in Banjara Hills. Following a relaxed lunch, we went shopping at a nearby mall before heading to Hussain Sagar Lake for boating. The experience was enjoyable despite the crowds. Back at the hotel, our dinner experience was slightly marred by buffet delays, but overall, the trip ended on a fulfilling note. The next morning, we packed our bags and returned home, refreshed and grateful for the short escape.

Top Highlights from the Trip:
- The palace’s multi-level landscaping with lush gardens and trees added to its charm.
- The breathtaking nighttime view from Taj Falaknuma truly felt like floating above the stars.
Pro Tips for Planning a Similar Trip:
- Hotel prices have significantly increased post-pandemic, but Taj Falaknuma is worth a visit, even if just for one night to manage the budget.
Approximate Cost of Trip: 5
This short but much-needed getaway reminded us why traveling is such an essential part of life, especially after a long period of staying indoors.
